Product Review: Furuta – Gudetama Chocolates & Chocolate Wafer Bar

Gudetama, the depressed egg, is a very popular mascot in Japan. The character was created by Sanrio in 2013. Personally I think this mascot is adorable, its design is simple but still cute. I’ve previously reviewed two versions of the Gudetama Pudding Kits and since I loved the custard flavour in those I was curious about these snacks as well.

Furuta – Gudetama Chocolates with Custard Filling
Price: ±€7 for a bag of 18 chocolates

I expected a creamy filling, but instead the filling was pretty dry and crumbled easily. It tasted a little custardy, but mainly tasted like powdered sugar. The outer layer of chocolate was a little more bitter than milk chocolate usually is and the layer was thicker than I’m used to with chocolates.

Overall I liked these little Gudetama chocolates, but I did expect a creamier, and yellow, filling. The dominant flavour is the milk chocolate, but it’s also pretty sweet. I loved the adorable Gudetama facial expressions on the chocolate wrappers.

Furuta – Gudetama Chocolate Wafer Bar
Price: ±€2 for one bar

This Gudetama chocolate bar is also a little less yellow than I expected from the packaging. The most dominant flavour was the milk chocolate bottom layer, but you do taste the custardy flavour in the white chocolate. This chocolate bar was a lot less sweet than the chocolates. I liked the crunchiness of the wafer in the middle and the two different flavours of chocolate. The cream layer was a bit sweeter than the other layers and creamier than the filling from the chocolates.

I liked this chocolate bar, it is a small bar, but definitely has a nice flavour and cute packaging. There are different designs for the packaging, all Gudetama themed of course.

Overall I enjoyed both chocolate treats, but I preferred the different textures and creaminess of the chocolate wafer bar more. The chocolates were nice, but a bit too sweet for me.
