Product Review: Meiji – Meltykiss: Premium Chocolate, Fruity Strawberry, Hazelnut & Creamy Milk

Photographs by MuchMunchies

These beautifully packaged chocolate treats by Meiji are only sold in and around the winter season. There are several kinds of Meltykiss available, in this review you’ll find the following flavours: Premium Chocolate, Fruity Strawberry, Hazelnut & Creamy Milk.

Meiji – Meltykiss: Premium Chocolate
Price: ± €6,-

Although the chocolate centre was creamy, I had expected it to be creamier. It looks softer on the packaging, but it wasn’t quite that soft. In fact, it didn’t differ much in texture or flavour from the outer layer of chocolate. Regardless it wasn’t hard to bite into and it was quite flavourful, slightly bitter.

Meiji – Meltykiss: Fruity Strawberry
Price: ± €6,-

Once again the texture of the filling surprised me, I’d expected something almost like a strawberry jelly. The filling was creamy and soft. There was a clear strawberry flavour to it and a sourness as well. It wasn’t entirely smooth, there was a slight texture to the filling which reminded me of freeze-dried strawberry powder. The chocolate outer layer fits well with the centre.

Meiji – Meltykiss: Hazelnut
Price: ± €6,-

This chocolate contained a smooth filling with a hazelnut flavour to it. It also seemed to have a bit of a milk flavour to it as well and was creamy. The chocolate outer layer complimented the hazelnut centre well.

Meiji – Meltykiss: Creamy Milk
Price: ± €6,-

‘Creamy Milk’ does describe the filling of this chocolate quite well. The centre is creamy and has a milk flavour to it, which fits really well with the thin outer chocolate layer. The slight dusting of cocoa adds a little texture to the outer layer.

The illustrations on the packaging didn’t quite match the contents, in the sense that the fillings weren’t as soft as they’d looked. The shine on the image made me expect a jelly filling, but I was pleasantly surprised with the sturdier texture of these chocolates. They all consisted of a thin outer chocolate layer and a creamier centre. Although all of them were dusted with cocoa powder, it was less obvious than the boxes imply.

Each of the boxes contains about 56 grams of chocolates. The colour of the packaging varies per flavour, but the overall design is quite similar. They are all appropriately decorated with snowflakes. Each chocolate is individually wrapped, in a wrapper that fits with the box design very well.

Overall the packaging fits these winter exclusive chocolates and gives off a luxurious feel.

Colourful artistic cover of TsuShiMaMiRe 20th full-length album バンドは水物 (MIZUMONO), featuring the three members at that time, vocalist and guitarist Mari, bass player Yayoi and drummer Maiko. There are masks drawn on their faces and on top of it the band name and album title in a font that seems like splashes of water.
