The photo depicts the Japanese pianist and jazz composer Hiromi Uehara, also known as Hiromi, wearing a colourful outfit (light green with white and blue/purple elements) with her arms crossed and resting on her knees and her head tilted and looking towards the camera, almost giving the idea that her head is supported by her arms. The backdrop consists of a combination of paintings, colourful grafitti and foil. Japanese pianist and jazz composer Hiromi Uehara will be touring Europe with her band Hiromi’s Sonicwonder, starting this week in Spain, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Italy, and the United Kingdom. If you can’t make it to any of the summer shows, it’s good to know that the European tour will continue in October, with several shows already confirmed, including in Switzerland and the Netherlands.

Uehara began her piano studies at a young age, quickly demonstrating her exceptional talent. At 17, she was invited by Chick Corea to perform with him at a concert in Tokyo; the two later collaborated on the album Duet. In 1999, Hiromi entered the Berklee College of Music in Boston, during this study, she was signed to the prestigious jazz label Telarc and made her international debut in 2003 with the album Another Mind.

If you watched the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics, in 2021, you surely noticed Hiromi Uehara’s performance. The music Hiromi produces blends various genres, including classical, rock, fusion, funk, and post-bop with jazz creating a unique and energetic style. In October of 2023, Hiromi released her twelfth studio album Sonicwonderland, showcasing her skills on the analogue synthesizer and electric piano, in addition to the piano.

In September, NPR Music published a new video of Tiny Desk Concerts featuring performance of Hiromi and her band playing two songs, Sonicwonderland and Wanted. The musicians in Hiromi’s Sonicwonder are Hiromi Uehara on piano and keyboard, Adam O’Farrill on trumpet, Gene Coye on drums, and Hadrien Feraud on bass.
