Recently, alternative indie rock band Helsinki Lambda Club performed at SXSW, but soon the three-member band will make their first appearance in the United Kingdom for a four-show run, including two appearances at The Great Escape. This upcoming tour, titled HLC AIRLINES, has been supported by a crowdfunding campaign to which Helsinki Lambda Club’s Japanese fans could contribute.
Formed in 2013 in Tokyo and consisting of vocalist and guitarist Kaoru Hashimoto, guitarist Taiki Kumagai and bassist Kodai Inaba, the band has already performed several times outside Japan, including Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and most recently the United States. In a few weeks, the UK may be added to that list.
Helsinki Lambda Club’s musical roots range from 70s rock to modern indie pop, resulting in a sound that contains both the attitude of garage punk and the spirit of new wave and psychedelia. In addition, the musicians add very catchy melodies, playful lyrics and experimental soundscapes that can change from song to song from sunny surf rock to full-on psychedelia.
Last summer, the band released an album entitled Welcome to Helsinki Lambda Club, of which one of the tracks, Good News Is Bad News, received a slowcore remix by British indie pop band Swim Deep. This remix was released earlier this month.
