The new dates for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will still be called Tokyo 2020, are announced after an agreement was made between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the organisation of the Olympics in Tokyo.

It will once more be planned for the Summer period, as it was planned for this year. The Olympic Games will take place from 23 July to 8 August 2021 and the Paralympic Games will take place from 24 August until 5 September 2021.

A lengthy message was posted on the website of Tokyo 2020 explaining how the choice of the new dates was made and what the considerations were for it: the developments around COVID-19, interests of Olympic athletes and the global international sports calendar.

Previously it was confirmed that all athletes already qualified and quota places already assigned for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will remain unchanged. This is a result of the fact that these Olympic Games Tokyo , in agreement with Japan, will remain the Games of the XXXII Olympiad.

Last week the postponement of Tokyo 2020 was announced. It has never happened before in the history of the Olympic Games that it got postponed, but it was cancelled a number of times during the First and Second World Wars.
