AnimeCon Classic will not take place in June 2020, but in September 2021. That is what the organisation behind AnimeCon, J-POP Foundation, stated in an announcement that was shared yesterday. Almost 2 weeks after announcing the dates for the regular AnimeCon, it is now clear that 2020 will be without AnimeCon.
J-POP Foundation said the following in the statement: “It is with a heavy heart we will have to inform you that due to the coronavirus and the measures imposed on us by the government AnimeCon Classic 2020 will be postponed to next year. We do not feel that it is possible to give you the safe and high-quality experience we want to bring you, which led us to this decision.”
The new measurements of the government, where they banned all gatherings until the first of June, gives the organisation little space to arrange everything. Since every country has different measurements, it might even make it impossible for guests to come to the event as they might have travel restrictions around that time. The same is also for the international audience that AnimeCon attracts every year as well as the dealers who might have stocking problems since the current situation surrounding COVID-19 closed factories, stores and more.
AnimeCon Classic will now take place from 24 through 26 September 2021 at Theater Hotel Almelo, with the same theme as was planned for this year: The Roaring Twenties. For everybody who looks forward to this event, they have to wait 1 year and 6 months for it. We can now all focus on the fact that there will be two AnimeCon editions next year, in 2021.
If you are not able to join the new date, you can get a refund. If you decide to keep the ticket, it will be upgraded to a hero ticket with some small perks that will be announced later on. More information about the hotels and the convention can be found on the website of AnimeCon. In regards to the several cosplay competitions, please keep an eye on the website as well. It was stated in a Q&A in the Discord of AnimeCon that C4 will take place at the regular AnimeCon in Rijswijk.
