Museum Volkenkunde calls for the help of the public, they have started a crowdfunding campaign for the restoration of Kawahara Keiga’s recently purchased folding screen.
The folding screen has a very large format and shows how Japanese international relations went through Nagasaki. The masterpiece is a key piece for the museum’s collection because the Dutch were the only Europeans who had access to Japan.
The restoration of this folding screen is a very important and extensive project. Extensive preliminary research has been done into the current state of the screen. This shows that the damage is more serious than previously suspected. It is clear that it is no longer possible to wait for a complete and far-reaching restoration.
