Product Review: Meiji – Fran Strawberry, Chocolate & Double Chocolate

Not quite pocky, since it’s not a product by Glico, but definitely a snack that peaked my interest. The images on the packaging appealed to me, the whipped cream gives the impression of a creamy yet light snack. There have been more flavours available in the past, but at the time I purchased these there were only three flavours available: Strawberry, Chocolate and Double Chocolate.

Meiji – Fran: Strawberry
Price: ± €2,- for a package of 59 grams

The chocolate on these biscuit sticks is very creamy. This one had an artificial strawberry flavour, which was slightly sour. I personally love that a lot of strawberry flavoured chocolate products from Japan have a sour element to them. The cookie had a neutral flavour, which fit well with the strawberry chocolate.

Meiji – Fran: Chocolate
Price: ± €2,- for a package of 59 grams

This flavour had a chocolate biscuit stick as its base, as opposed to the neutral one, which fit well with the creamy milk chocolate that covered the stick. Of all three the flavours I think this one would appeal to the most people, since it’s not bitter nor fruit flavoured, which is probably why they consider this the ‘original’ flavour.

Meiji – Fran: Double Chocolate
Price: ± €2,- for a package of 59 grams

Creamy chocolate once more, but this one was a bit bitter and clearly dark chocolate rather than milk. The biscuit stick was the same as the one from the chocolate variety. It was slightly more filling than the other two flavours.

Unlike regular pocky, these cookie sticks of Fran are quite thick and crumble a bit more. They reminded me of Liga Milkbreak cookies. There weren’t very many Fran sticks in a package, there were nine in total, but since this is promoted as somewhat of a ‘deluxe’ product that’s not very surprising. None of the flavours disappointed me and I’ll definitely purchase these again.
