Tokimeki is a relatively new brand that sells all kind of Japanese snacks, such as Mochi and Dorayaki, but also these different flavour biscuit sticks. They are sell Bubble Tea and other kinds of snacks from throughout Asia. If you are interested in learning more about this brand and their variety of products, read this interview we did recently with them.

The packaging of these were simple yet adorable at the same time. Each flavour had a different “expression” on the packaging, which they achieved by simply changing the mouth. The striped design is the same on each of them, but the colours vary depending on the flavour. Each box contains two packs with cookie sticks, about 8 per pack.

One of the things that make these different from other types of cookie sticks, like Pocky, is that all of the cookie sticks have cocoa in them and are darker because of this. The sticks themselves were crunchy and had a biscuit-like texture to them, the cocoa made them taste a bit chocolatey.

On its own the cookie was a bit dry, but it did combine well with the chocolate layers. These layers of chocolate were a little thinner than the packaging suggested, as you can see on the photographs.

All of the individual packages were priced around €2,-.

Yoghurt

I enjoyed these quite a bit. They weren’t overly sweet and even seemed the slightest bit sour. The chocolate layer did have a bit of a yoghurt flavour to it, because of this sourness as well. It reminded me of Liga Milkbreak, which is a Dutch wheat biscuit with a milk filling.

Strawberry

These had a very clear strawberry smell to them, but because of the thin layer the chocolate was a bit overpowered by the biscuit. They were nice, but I would’ve preferred a stronger strawberry flavour.

Blueberry

A little sweeter than the previous two flavours, this one tasted a bit like blueberry candy. It was a clear flavour, despite the biscuit.

Chocolate

While the chocolate layer was just as thin as the ones from the other flavours, this one was stronger and more present. Probably because it had a bitter dark chocolate flavour to it, which complimented the flavour of the biscuit well.

Bubble tea

In all honesty, I have never had bubble tea. I did recognize a tea flavour and a sweetness in the chocolate layer that covered the biscuit. I can’t say if it tasted like bubble tea, but it did taste quite a bit like sweet tea.

Milk Banana

This was the only one out of the bunch that had chunks in the chocolate layer. It smelled and tasted a lot like banana candies, the chunks had a slightly more intense flavour.

Overall I enjoyed these Tokimeki biscuit sticks, but I would’ve enjoyed them even more if the chocolate layers had been a bit thicker, especially because the biscuit had a stronger flavour due to the cocoa powder. I think my favourite flavour was the yoghurt flavour, but there wasn’t one that I disliked.

Have you tried these Biscuit Sticks before? Which one was your favourite?

The photo is a black and white photograph of the three men of HEBI KATANA standing together outdoors, in what appears to be an overgrown garden. The background is filled with densely grown trees and bushes, and the ground is covered with irregularly shaped tiles.
