Students from the Kogakkan University worked on a mini-documentary with a focus on the garage punk trio MUTANT MONSTER, titled Live strong…. The documentary was filmed by the students in 2019, originally released in 2020 and got recently published on the YouTube channel of the university with English subtitles. The university is based in the city of Ise in Mie Prefecture, the hometown of 2/3 of MUTANT MONSTER. Currently the trio is based in Tokyo.
In this documentary, the band gets introduced accompanied by footage from their performances in and outside Japan. The documentary delves deeper into the fact that the band moved to Tokyo to increase their chances as a rock band, the message they want to convey with their music and how that is received by some music fans and especially how they connect with the lyrics. Furthermore, the band members and the mother of BE and MEANA are interviewed to give more insight into the history of the band and how things are currently going with the band. Eventually, the documentary can be seen as one with a powerful message that ‘no matter what situation we are living in, we shouldn’t give up on our dreams’. This is very fitting to what can be found on the website of MUTANT MONSTER: “If we do nothing, ‘NO FUTURE’ will come.”
Formed in 2008 by the two sisters BE and MEANA, the trio started to perform overseas from 2016, with a lot of shows in the United Kingdom and even more on the mainland of Europe in 2018, when they toured as the support act for Electric Six. After that, MUTANT MONSTER decided to tour Europe again later in 2018 and the UK in 2019. Outside Europe, the band performed in Canada and Taiwan.
