Music (Video) Review: La bit Pluie – Peu de Sucre

In case you keep an eye on the weekly music video roundup, the name La bit Pluie is probably no stranger to you. La bit Pluie’s music can be described as alternative electropop, with the Tokyo-based music unit making music where chiptune and whispering vocals meet pixel art from Mol. Characterised as post-pop music by the trio, they have chosen to deviate for their third digital single Peu de Sucre with the use of electric guitar and flashy choruses, embracing the trendy hyperpop style.

 
The choice to incorporate elements of the hyperpop style into the new track is an interesting development, but Peu de Sucre still retains the recognisable characteristics of La bit Pluie. For a music unit with a not very large disography, it is understandable that they are still searching for their ideal sound. At the same time, it also shows that La bit Pluie are willing to experiment with their sound while keeping the core of their identity intact. It evokes curiosity about what the trio will bring in the future.

The music video for Peu de Sucre has been fully animated by Mol using handmade paper, pixel art, and illustrations resulting in a colourful adventure with La bit Pluie’s mascot. As a result, you can’t look away for a moment as something new is constantly happening in every corner of the video, while at the same time, your eyes are treated to an explosion of colour and a storyline that harks back to La bit Pluie’s origins with their fairytale-like stories.

 
The song itself is less than two minutes long, which is relatively short, but what has been put in in terms of animation is so densely packed that you don’t get much chance to process it after one viewing. With that in mind, it invites the viewer to watch the video several times to discover new aspects of the music video that were not noticed before. This makes the music video not only pleasing to the eye with an explosion of colour and movement, but also an intriguing work of art that keeps you captivated. The combination of the song and the music video perfectly complement each other.

The music unit was founded in 2022 with composer na<1ms: (read it as nakimushi) as the core, in addition, the trio consists of artist Mol and vocalist Mw. (read it as Moo). Their mission is to create a fairytale universe with a strong sense of individuality through the use of different production styles.

 
Although their releases are sporadic – the first single Lapis lazuli was released in April 2022 and Midnight Cosmo in July 2023 – their remix of the song いちごミルク (Ichigo miruku) by Japanese music producer Tomggg featuring ena mori earned them a prize in a remix competition and was included in a remix album released by Tomggg through Avex. It not only brought attention to their creative approach, but was also a milestone in their career. We’ll have to wait and see what La bit Pluie has in store next, but we will probably have to wait until next year.
