Pigeon – Microwave Shortcake – Elaborate
Price: ± €9
Extra supplies: Microwave, Bowl, Spoon, Balloon Whisk, Serrated Knife, Cooling Rack, 100 ml of Milk and Fresh Fruit (Optional).

In honour of AVO Magazine’s upcoming 19th birthday it seemed fitting to review this adorable cake making candy kit. This one is even suited for children age one and up, so it’d be perfect for a young child as well, especially given its size. To make this cake ever more fun to make, and prettier to look at, you can use any decorations you’d like. The instructions suggest adding fresh fruit, but you can also add other (edible) decorations if you’d like. Inside the box you’ll find one packet of cake mix, one packet of whip cream powder, one cake mould, one piping bag and one star piping tip.

Flavour: ♥♥
The vanilla sponge cake layers themselves were a bit dry, but that is usually the case with cake made in a microwave. The cream had a smooth texture and a vanilla flavour to it, it sort of melted away in my mouth and it tasted more like milk with some vanilla added rather than whipped cream.

Combined the cake and cream really complimented one another, but because of the slight dryness of the cake I would’ve preferred to have had more cream. Then I’d have cut the cake into three layers, filling each with a nice amount of cream and fruit.

This cake is pretty neutral and goes well with whatever sweet toppings you add to it. I chose to add some strawberries, for sweetness and fruity flavour, and some chocolate candies. This went really well with the cake.

If you do prepare this kit for a one year old child, make sure to add toppings and fillings that are safe for them. And cut it into small pieces, a big piece of cake might be hard to swallow because of the slight dryness of it.

Time needed: ⧗⧗
This is one of those kits that can take a little more time, but it’s mostly up to you how much time you want to spend on decorating the cake.

Difficulty level: ★
Certainly an easy kit to make, although you can make it more complex by adding complicated decorations. If you keep it simple it won’t be hard to make, just follow the steps and it should turn out well.

Similarity: 📷📷📷
As you can see on the pictures below, the final product looks pretty similar to the picture on the packaging. Since it is a cake, and you’re free to decorate it however you’d like, it probably won’t look exactly the same. The biggest difference is mainly that the cake on the packaging looks a little fake, texture wise, and the cream is spread out more evenly.

Want to enjoy this kit again?

Although you could re-use the cake mould if you’d like, this kit can be recreated really well without it. Given that this kit makes a cake: just find a nice recipe for a cake and bake one, decorate with whipped cream or buttercream.. add anything you’d like. Want some inspiration? Find some cake recipes here.

This is not a sponsored review and because of this we won’t mention where this set was bought, search online using the name of this candy kit and you should be able to find it.
