From 8 to 10 January 2021 Stichting Berg & van Dalen presents the exhibition Edo Sanpu 2020 at Zone2Source (The Glass House) Amstelpark in the city of Amsterdam.
Edo Sanpu 2020 consists of four art projects, inspired by four distinctive aspects of the relationship between the Netherlands and Japan (past and present). In particular: trade & transport, food & table manners, language & game and knowledge & science. Artists Hannie van den Bergh and Jan van den Berg created a series of works of art based on their travel experiences and encounters in Japan about the mutual perception of The Netherlands and Japan, past and present.
They did this in collaboration with a diversity of Japanese artists, experts and stakeholders. Under the slogan Let’s play (Karuta card game) – Let’s eat (Noripan community art project) – Let’s see (Performance of Nature video installation) – Let’s meet (the book Exformatie) the works of EdoSanpu2020 depict the intercultural dialogue between two cultures that are as different from each other as they have been looking for each other for centuries.
Edo Sanpu 2020 is an initiative of Stichting Berg & van Dalen. This foundation aims to use the resources of the arts to investigate and represent the artistic, cultural and scientific kinship between the Netherlands and Japan. This is done by organising exhibitions, lectures, workshops, performances, films, publications and Artist In Residency programmes. Hannie van den Bergh is a visual artist, graphic designer and co-founder and curator of Deshima AIR: an Artist in Residency programme for Japanese artists in the Netherlands. Jan van den Berg is a performing artist and filmmaker. In addition, he teaches at the Theatre Directing course at Academy of Theatre and Dance (AHK) in Amsterdam.
