Earlier today, it was announced that the Olympic Games in Tokyo, that was planned for the Summer, will be postponed to a date beyond 2020, but not later than Summer 2021. This was decided after a conference call between the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, and President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach. The decision based on the information provided by the WHO. A statement was posted on the website of Tokyo 2020.
The Olympic flame remains in Japan as a beacon of hope. It arrived last Friday in the city Matsushima and originally would have a journey in a few days, in the form as a Torch Relay, from Fukushima to Tokyo. And what many would have thought, that the Olympic Games would be renamed to Tokyo 2021, will not be the case, the name will stay Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.
It has never happened before in the history of the Olympic Games that it got postponed, but it was cancelled a number of times during the First and Second World Wars.
