Recently I purchased a few Japanese Candy kits and I will review all of these for AVO. This is not a sponsored review and because of this I won’t mention where I bought this set, if you do an online search using the name of this kit you’ll be able to find this one in several webshops.
Popin Cookin – Ramen – Standard
Price: ± €5
Extra supplies: Glass, Water, Scissors.
Most of the Popin Cookin kits have English instructions, which you can find here.
With this kit you create a bowl of ramen, an egg, a naruto and two dumplings. Making the ramen takes almost no time and the rest of it also takes very little time. In total I was busy with this kit for about 15 minutes. There is no waiting time.
This kit is pretty easy to make, there’s not much that can go wrong while making this set. Only cutting out the parts of plastic can be a little annoying, if you want to cut out the bowl neatly. This set has quite a bit of detail for a small set. For instance there are pieces of ‘meat’ and ‘peas’ in the dumplings and the egg and Naruto add a nice detail as well.
In the package there’s a bowl for the ramen, you can chose to use a different bowl, but there is only a little bit of ramen so other bowls might be too big.
The final product looks cute and looks like the picture on the packaging quite well, except for the bowl. There’s no red edge around the bowl like in the picture on the packaging.
The soup tasted like cola, just like the pink sprinkles, which looked like tiny pieces of meat. The green sprinkled, that looked like tiny peas, tasted a little sweet. Aside from that they didn’t have a very specific flavour.
The white candy is the same as the white candy from the Kyan Land set, this tasted quite a bit like bubble-gum, but there was a slight lemon flavour to it as well. I really liked the taste of it, but I was pretty surprised by the lemon flavour. The dumplings tasted like a combination of the white candy and the pink sprinkles, with a little bit of a crispy texture, although these dissolve in your mouth quickly.
In general I thought this set was pretty tasty, only the noodles weren’t very special to me. The noodles tasted like the soup and the texture was a little gelatine like.
TIP: Make sure you clean and dry your hands well, before kneading the white candy. Otherwise dust particles or filth might get in your white candy and you’ll be able to see this. Do make sure to knead it through thoroughly, this makes it easier to press it into the shapes.

Clean the mould with warm water, after using it, and let it air dry. Don’t use soap when cleaning this mould.
If you’d like to reuse the mould you could use fondant or marzipan to make the dumplings, egg and naruto. You could fill the dumplings with whatever kind of sprinkles you’d like and the egg yolk and yellow in the naruto can be filled in with lemon curd, for instance.
You could use candy laces as noodles and you could fill the bowl with whatever drink you’d like.
