MV Review: Spook Jack – Snow the dark

The Candy Spooky Theater officially never stopped, but went on hiatus in 2014, and opened new doors for all the band members of that band. Jack Spooky decided after his band adventures in THEEND and beni no sakura (紅ノ桜) to go solo. The first step was the name change: Spook Jack.

Snow the dark is one of the tracks on his first release as Spook Jack.

The music video of Snow the dark is a pinhole edition, the screen is edited as if you are looking through a small hole. Next to that is the video in monochrome to enhance the ‘spooky’ feel, but in the music, there is a lack of horror elements. But perhaps this was not the direction where the musician wants to go with his new solo project.

Spook Jack has never really changed over the years in how he visually presents to his audience. His face is painted white and looks like a skull, with the black eyes that seems like the eyes of panda bears, a part of the denture is drawn on his cheek. It still fits well with his artist name. In the video he Spook Jack is in a bag, which gives the idea of a body bag, that is pulled through the snow by a mysterious person. He ends up into an empty snowy landscape and knows to escape from the dead that was planned by the mysterious person. Despite the fact Spook Jack is stating on his Facebook page that he is a vampire, it’s only a matter of wondering if he escaped death or just could not die, which made the act of the mysterious person senseless.

The song floats like a boat quietly on the water without any speed. It sounds pleasant and due to the additions of various elements, the song gets a dark feel. Snow the dark is an atmospheric dark ballad, with the relaxing voice of Spook Jack. It’s a nice introduction to Spook Jack’s new work and it’s awaiting what he is planning in the future.

Apart from the addition of the band logo and the song title placed, the background is completely black. In the centre of the image, two robotic hands are shown and in the middle of these hands a coin with an eye on it is placed. This is surrounded by a sort of halo and green smoke.
