Recently I purchased a few Japanese Candy kits and I will review all of these for AVO. This is not a sponsored review and because of this I won’t mention where I bought this set, if you do an online search using the name of this kit you’ll be able to find this one in several webshops.
Lotte – Koala’s March Chocolate House – Very Elaborate
Price: ± €20,-
Extra supplies: Spoon, Refrigerator, Microwave*, Heatproof Bowl or Cup, Optional: Piping bag or Sandwich bag, Cutting Board, Scissors.
* Instead of heating the mixture in the microwave I decided to heat it au bain-marie, with a heatproof glass bowl on top of a pan with a small layer of boiling water. I stirred until all of the chocolate had melted and then took the bowl off of the pan, wiped the bottom dry with a kitchen towel and poured the mixture back in the cup to be able to put it in the mould.

With this kit from Koala’s March, or Koala no Machi, you create a very cute little chocolate house out of chocolate, wafers and pejoy sticks. Aside from that you can also create a seesaw, a bench and a slip and slide. In this package there’s also some cookies, filled with chocolate, with koala’s drawn on them. You can put these next to the house and on the seesaw, the bench and the slip and slide. There are two houses you can make, shown in the instructions, but there’s only enough in the kit to create one house. In total this set took up about half an hour of my time, if you don’t take the waiting time into account. You could spend even more time decorating the house, for instance by using icing sugar as snow and royal icing as ice dripping from the roof.
This kit takes quite a bit of time to make, but the separate pieces are easy to make. It’s very fun to decorate the house and put it together, you see it becoming one whole. On top of that I always love it when you get to decorate something however you like.
The final result looks cute, try to do everything as neatly as you can. As you can see on the picture it looks pretty similar to the little chocolate house on the pictures on the packaging, only the chocolate is a little darker than it appears on the packaging.
The milk chocolate in this set tasted a little different than here, it tasted a little creamier, but also a little more bitter than I’m use to from Dutch milk chocolate. Even so it wasn’t an unpleasant flavour, just a little different.
This kit contains three different kinds of cookies; koala cookies, Toppo sticks and wafers. The koala cookies are deliciously crunchy on the outside and have a soft milk chocolate filling. The Toppo sticks had a milk chocolate filling and the cookie around it reminded me a little of pretzel sticks, but without salt. The wagers were delightfully airy with a filling that tasted liked chocolate and hazelnuts.
In my opinion a very delicious set!
TIPS: The chocolate hardens quickly in the refrigerator, so 10 minutes in the refrigerator is long enough for it to harden.
If the wafer falls apart when you cut it you can put it back together with some melted chocolate.
Want to enjoy this kit again?
Clean the mould with warm water, after using it, and let it air dry. Don’t use soap when cleaning this mould.
If you keep the instructions you can buy these kinds of cookies, or other kinds, again. By following the instructions you can create the houses again, even with other colours if you’d like.
