Gakuen Basara (学園BASARA)

Type: Anime
Studio: Brain’s Base
Genres: Comedy, Action, School, Parody

Starts Airing: 4th of October 2018
Number of Episodes: Unknown

This series places the warriors from CAPCOM’s action game series (Sengoku Basara) in a modern high school. These warriors are now rival students, with Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura competing to become the next student council president.

Recommended by AlexD:
As a fan of the Sengoku Basara anime series, my interested already became peaked when I heard of this. Knowing how fun and crazy the original series is, I can imagine it can only get funnier if it is all set in a high school. Although, at least now Date’s western references will make sense in this time period. If you are looking for a laugh this season, this will surely be the series to watch this season!

Tonari no Kyuuketsuki-san (となりの吸血鬼さん)

Type: Anime
Studio: Studio Gokumi, AXsiZ
Genres: Komedie, Slice of Life, Supernatural, Vampire
Based on the eponymous 4-koma manga by Amatou

Starts Airing: 5th of October 2018
Number of episodes: Unknown

High school girl Amano was saved by a vampire girl named Sophie Twilight, since then Amano developed a liking for Sophie while the vampire girl wants to be alone. It ends up with Amano en Sophie living together. Although Sophie is a vampire, she never attacked humans and purchases blood and anime goods via mail and is living a quite modern life.

Recommended by Fran:
Halloween is coming and I have a weak spot for vampires. I think this comedy can be fun to watch, although I am not familiar with the 4-koma manga. Putting a 4-koma into an anime series can be quite interesting. I expect a few short stories in one episode, but it would be fun if the anime series will be having a slower pace with more depth in the storyline.

Dakaretai Otoko 1-i ni Odosarete Imasu. (抱かれたい男1位に脅されています。)

Type: Anime
Studio: CloverWorks
Genres: Drama, Romance, Shounen Ai
Based on the eponymous manga by Hashigo Sakurabi

Starts airing: October 2018
Number of episodes: Unknown

After being bumped to the number 2 Most Huggable by a newbie actor called Azumaya, Saijou Takato’s 5-year reign is over. To top it off Azumaya catches him in his shameful drunken state and uses it to blackmail Takato. In exchange for his silence, Azumaya says he wants to hold Takato, to Takato’s surprise.

Recommended by Yuki:
This seems like it’d have a lot of fun moments, being that the relationship starts as a rivalry. I think it’ll be a sweet romance story, with some drama, but also some laughs. The storyline isn’t super original, but if you like these kinds of anime I’m sure it won’t disappoint.

Double Decker! Doug & Kirill (DOUBLE DECKER! ダグ&キリル)

Type: Anime
Studio: Sunrise
Genres: Action

Starts airing: October 2018
Number of Episodes: Unknown

Double Decker! Doug & Kirill is a new buddy cop drama, following the story of a two-man detective team. One of them is a veteran who is losing his touch and the other is a very enthusiastic rookie, with more enthusiasm then skill.

Recommended by Hageshi:
Even though it’s a part of the Tiger & Bunny world, Double Decker! Doug & Kirill is not a spin-off or addition of this serie. The team of Doug & Kirill does exist, just like Tiger & Bunny, out of two characters with completely different personalities, which made me very curious about how this will exploit itself in the anime. I’m also a fan of action series and detectives. There isn’t much known about it, but that makes it more interesting and appealing in my opinion!

Usuzumi-zakura -GARO- (薄墨桜 -GARO-)

Type: Movie
Studio: Studio VOLN
Genres: Action

Starts Airing: October 2018

“The Heian world, the beautiful capital Kyo in its glorious splendour. When two attractive Onmyouji meet, the sad, ephemeral, yet beautiful cherry blossoms will bloom after a millennium.”

Recommended by Fran:
The movie is an original, so there is no source as a manga where this story comes from. But the trailer does gives a vibe that I also have with the anime series Touken Ranbu; the story takes place in the past, contains fights and there is a big chance that there is a romantic twist in this story. Although the movie will be shown in the movie theatres in Japan, I do hope that for example, Crunchyroll will get the chance to stream it on their website in the future.

Maybe interesting to know: Usuzumi-zakura is one of Japan’s great tree Cherry Trees and a National Natural Treasure. The tree can be found at Usuzumi Park in Gifu Prefecture and is over 1500 years old and it has been said that it has been planted by the Keitai Emperor (the 26th emperor of Japan) himself in the 6th century. The name of the tree means ‘pale grey cherry blossoms’. The tree that is used in the key visual looks like the Usuzumi-zakura that you can find in Japan.

Radiant (ラディアン)

Type: Anime
Studio: Lerche
Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Magic

Starts Airing: October 2018
Number of Episodes: Unknown

In a world where creatures called Nemesis fall from the sky. Those few living beings who survived contact with these creatures become infected, and in this world they become a wizard. The story follows Seth, an aspiring sorcerer, who not only fights the Nemesis, but is on a quest to find the Radiant (the source of the Nemesis). In this quest he is aided by a fraction of fellow sorcerers in his travels around the world.

Recommended by AlexD:
I feel this series will be very interesting as from the plot it seems to be a Shonen Jump series, it is, in fact, an adaptation of a French comic (written in the style of manga) that has become popular in Japan. The combination of French and Japanese will surely add an interesting twist to the series making it unique and worth a watch for sure!

Jingai-san no Yome (人外さんの嫁)

Type: Anime
Studio: Onbekend
Genres: Comedy, Romance, Fantasy
Based on the eponymous manga by Yu Aikawa & Akio Yasaka

Starts airing: October 2018
Number of episodes: Unknown

Tomari Hinowa led a normal high school life, until one day he is told he has to marry a mysterious creature called Kanenogi and be its wife. This is the beginning of their newlywed life.

Recommended by Yuki:
This anime just sounds like it has a good basis for a nice amount of comedy. I wonder how the ‘romance’ theme will shine through, given the plot which mainly seems hilarious.

Zombieland Saga (ゾンビランドサガ)

Type: Anime
Studio: MAPPA
Genres: Supernatural

Starts Airing: October 2018
Number of episodes: Unknown

Sudden death, escape from doom, false dance, flesh and blood, fight to survive, light and shadow, selfless love.

Save the world?

Recommended by Fran:
The title intrigued me, because Halloween is coming, but the trailer didn’t as it didn’t show me anything about what to expect from this anime series. But I don’t give up that easily! The mystery of this original TV animation is what keeps me interested. The official page does do some promotion, but only step by step. The voice actors are announced, with very familiar names as Miyano Mamoru and Kaede Hondo. Also, it is a collaboration between animation studio MAPPA, production company Avex Pictures, and mobile game developer Cygames, which give the idea that Zombieland Saga isn’t some small project. I hope Zombieland Saga will not disappoint me!

Gyakuten Saiban: Sono “Shinjitsu”, Igi Ari! (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney) Season 2

Type: Anime
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Genres: Mystery, Crime, Drama, Comedy

Starts Airing: October 2018
Number of Episodes: Unknown

Ace Attorney Ryuichi Naruhodo (Phoenix Wright) carries on defending his clients in the courtroom. Investigating the unusual case and bluffing his way through the trial to prove their innocence. Across the courtroom this time he is faced against the mysterious new prosecutor, Godot. Season 2 starts from adapting the third game, ‘Trials and Tribulations’.

Recommended by AlexD:
As a fan of the games and season one of the anime, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the return of the show. Season one was very loyal to the game which I liked since it was a while since I played the games, so saved me replaying them. They managed to keep the feel and energy of the series, making it feel like you were experiencing the game. The studio managed to effectively nail the funny and the serious moments, making it a great adaption and we can expect more of the same with this season.

Yagate Kimi ni Naru (やがて君になる)

Type: Anime
Studio: TROYCA
Genres: School, Shoujo Ai
Based on the eponymous manga by Nio Nakatani

Starts airing: October 2018
Number of episodes: Unknown

Yuu has always been a huge fan of shoujo manga, but is disappointed by the first confession she receives. She expected to feel something, but doesn’t. Upon entering high school she sees Nanami, the student council president, turn down someone with such maturity that she decides she wants her help. Yuu still doesn’t know how to respond to the confession she’d received earlier at this point, but will her shoujo romance start of different than she always thought, with a confession from Nanami?

Recommended by Yuki:
This seems like it could be a fun and sweet romance story to watch. The characters look cute, although they do resemble a lot of other shoujo ai characters. The story isn’t super original, but if you like shoujo ai stories I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy this one too.

Which serie(s) are you going to watch?

If you’d like to see the anime you’re looking forward to most in next seasons’ list, become a writer for AVO Magazine!
