Awarded with a Nobel Prize last year, World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian organisation, helping 100 million people in 88 countries. Freerice is a method for learning new things and helping to end world hunger. Freerice itself has won several awards and received nominations for best game and best website.
Zero Hunger is one of the most important pillars for the World Food Programme to focus on. According to WFP, 690 million people go to bed every day on an empty stomach in a world where enough food is produced.
What is Freerice?
Freerice was launched in 2007. The game can be played through a web browser and with a mobile application. The game goes as follows: you get a multiple choice question and if you answer correctly, money in the form of grains of rice will be collected for United Nation’s World Food Programme. This game is supported by the advertising that is visible for each question, which helps the programme to raise food, among other things. WFP uses the funds raised for various projects of the organisation around the world. In 2020, WFP will have raised 2.6 billion grains of rice.
There are several categories to choose from, various languages, about the climate, geography, history and since last year also more information about COVID-19. Unfortunately, due to the latter mentioned, the advertising market has collapsed, which means that you can collect a bit fewer rice grains per good answered question, but it will be not for nothing. You, as a participant of the Freerice game, will in exchange for time learn something new or continue to train your knowledge and in doing so help WFP with the distribution of food.
