This four-piece band is fascinating, all four members of YONA YONA WEEKENDERS have a background in the melodic hardcore and punk world but are currently making music that fits more under the umbrella of city pop. The band has been active since 2016 and have been at the forefront of the underground scene for a while now. At the start of November, the four-piece released an intriguing music video for the song 君とdrive (Kimi to drive).

With the music video starting with a scene that should remind you of the American science fiction action comedy film Men in Black, surely a nod towards the famous film, the next scene we are a witness of a starting love story. It is the focus of the music video where a taxi driver falls in love at first sight when a woman steps into his car. During the drive, the taxi car breaks down, forcing the woman to walk down the road to a location where she meets someone to hand something over.

In the description of the music video, it says: “Isono-kun who only picks up female customers and has a habit of skipping work, falls one day in love at first sight with a female passenger. However, the passenger is a special agent who has come from the future to save the world. What is the fate of Isono-kun and the world?” To not further spoil the story in the music video, it can be surely said that it has been an intriguing one.

The song 君とdrive (Kimi to drive) was originally selected in October for a television commercial of the car brand Honda, at that time it was still unreleased. In the music video of YONA YONA WEEKENDERS, where the vocalist and guitarist is the taxi driver, it might be good to know that the two protagonists are driving in a Toyota Crown that soon after starts to generate smoke. So, is this music video also supposed to be an ad for Honda versus Toyota? It seems that most taxis use Toyota, so it may be that the band had no other choice, but it is almost certain that this fact made some people smile. All in all, if you don’t mind those details, the music video is just a fun watch, where you can enjoy the chill-out tunes, smooth voice of the vocalist and an amusing story. And the story might have a charming undertone, it is surely captivating while there is almost no dialogue. And the song itself? It is a perfect track to play during a car ride in the summer. A good choice by Honda.
