Do you like zen gardens and candy? An edible Japanese zen garden might be just up your alley then! This kit allows you to create patterns with a tiny rake and play with the zen garden as long as you like before consuming the whole garden. There are two versions of this kit available, kit A which is a Zen Garden with rocks and sand and kit B which is a Japanese Garden with a pond, rocks and sand.
Heart – Japanese Zen Garden – Simple
Price: ± €9 per Kit
Extra supplies: Water, Cup, Spoon, Cocktail pick, Refrigerator, Microwave*
*Only necessary for the B version of the kit, with the pond.
This is one of very few kits that have Japanese and English instructions on the packaging, which is a huge bonus for Western consumers.
Flavour: ♥♥
The candy sand had a sour flavour to it and hints of soda and lemon. It dissolved a bit in my mouth, which was nice since no one likes sand between their teeth. If you like M&Ms you’ll love the chocolate candy rocks, since they are very similar to M&Ms.
Kit A included the bigger candy rocks, made using the mould, powder and water. These tasted sour and like lemon and soda as well. They were slightly more sour than the candy sand was.
Kit B included the jelly pond, which had very little flavour to it. It tasted slightly sweetened, but didn’t have much flavour to it otherwise. This was my least favourite part, but tasted fine when combined with the candy sand.
When combining the elements of each kit they fit together quite well, in my opinion. The chocolate candy rocks balanced out the sour parts quite well with their sweetness and chocolate flavour.
Time needed: ⧗
There are very few steps to these kits. The B version has an extra step because of the jelly pond, but overall both kits don’t take up a lot of time.
Difficulty level: ★★
The steps of this kit are simple, but there are a few things to keep in mind when making this kit. Just make sure to add the right measurements of water and follow the instructions. It would’ve been a bit easier if the kit included a spoon or small cup for the exact amount of water needed. Distributing the sand evenly can be pretty hard when it comes to the B kit, since the jelly in already in place when you put the sand in.

As the pictures below show, the final product looks very similar to the packaging. The packaging gives a good indication of what the end result will be, although initially when I saw the packaging I though the fish would be in the jelly pond, not on the picture below.
Want to enjoy these kits again?
Clean the moulds with warm water, after using it, and let it air dry.
If you want to reuse the mould you could make jelly, gummies or chocolates. You could use coloured cookie crumbs as sand, blend it to get it really small and sand-like.
This is not a sponsored review and because of this the store where the set was purchased won’t be mentioned, if you do an online search using the name of this kit you should be able to find it in several webshops.
