With the decision of the German government to ban mass gatherings until the end of August of this year, it means not only for prominent festival Wacken Open Air that they have to skip 2020, but also for two other prominent festivals Rock am Ring and Rock im Park.
The sold-out festivals were planned to take place simultaneously in the weekend of 5 to 7 June to celebrate 35 years of Rock am Ring and 25 years of Rock im Park. The celebrations are now moved to next year, for the second weekend in June, the organisation stated in their message on their website. “Together with the live music industry, all hopes are now focused on the time after the state of emergency ends.”
Japanese metal group BABYMETAL was planned to perform at both festivals, as a start of their Summer tour through Europe. Seeing all the festival dates being cancelled in their planning, at this moment there are still a couple of shows planned at several live venues. Since the current situation is a cause for a lot of uncertainty, it is waiting and see what will be decided by the several governments or by the band itself.
The two open-air festivals can be added to many bigger and smaller European festivals being cancelled or postponed due to the current situation of COVID-19, such as Wacken Open Air, Hellfest, Roskilde Festival, Download Festival UK and more. All ticket buyers are asked for a little patience, since the organisation needs to work out the details now it has been clear that both big festivals can’t go ahead.
