From 9 January till 20 February, Japanologist Philo Ouweleen will have her solo exhibition at VOX-POP in Amsterdam, where she will present her paintings she made during her stay in the small Japanese city Kameoka. The exhibition can be seen as an ode to the normal everyday life in a small Japanese city and a reflection on the beauty of the (extra)ordinary.
During the period of the solo exhibition, there will be special evenings, including a festive opening of the exhibition, a Pecha Kucha and a film screening. The exhibition is open from Monday to Thursday between 10.00 and 17.00. Entrance is free.
Philo Ouweleen is a Japanologist who captures her fascination with Japan in research, writing and paintings. The project Stories from Kameoka originated during an artist in residency programme in January and February 2019 in Kameoka, a small Japanese city with the mountains always in sight and 30 minutes away from well-known neighbouring city Kyoto. The project consists of painted and written portraits of Kamejin: the people from Kameoka, and landscape paintings that illustrate the modern-day charms and challenges many small Japanese cities face, such as the issue of akiya (abandoned houses).
