Rock band Frederic (フレデリック) had performed for a sold-out Zepp Tokyo on the 20th of February already, but the day after there was another sold-out show in the same venue. The shows are a part of the FREDERHYTHM tour, which has the subtitle ~飄々とイマジネーション~ (Hyouhyou to imagination), or Improvisation and Imagination in English. The band celebrates the release of their second album, フレデリズム2 (Frederhythm 2), which was released on the 20th of February.

Frederic has been active since 2009 and belongs to the A-Sketch Music Label. The group revolves around twin brother Kenji and Koji Mihara. The music of Frederic is known for its repetitive rhythms and song lyrics generated from unique humour. Some will know the band because of a few contributions to anime series, among which the OVA from Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches, of which the track oddloop served as an ending theme. A track that surely wasn’t forgotten during this live show.

The room the show was held in inside Zepp Tokyo, at the corner of teamLab Borderless, dressed with disco balls which lit up beautifully when the light hit them, slowly filled up. Zepp Tokyo, which exists 20 years this year, has a capacity of 2700 standing spots. At the entrance, you could find a decorative piece of Frederic which you could use to take a photo to keep as a memory.

The setlist of Frederic is changing between new tracks and fan favourites like the relaxed たりないeye (Tarinai eye), the cheerful オンリーワンダー (ONLYWONDER) and the poppy TOGENKYO. The show started with the uptempo track シンセンス (Shinsensu), which created a great warm-up for the rest of the concert. Their newest track, Light, wasn’t skipped either. The sound had been arranged perfectly for the rock band, and you could hear all of the instruments clearly in the large venue. The vocals sounded great as well, and made everything a complete package.

For the encore, the members returned to the stage in a completely different outfit. The concert was closed off with 飄々とエモーション (Hyouhyou to Emotion), which you can find on the newest album of the band. The audience participated with great enthusiasm from start to finish to the songs Frederic delivered with full commitment, and the energy was very noticeable in the venue as well.

The members are dressed in leather(-like) clothing, giving the idea that it is inspired by motor clothing. The clothing is mostly black but differently decorated, with red and blue stripes, white stars in different sizes, and other symbols or words. Some of them are fully dressed like that, while others have extra additions, like a tartan-style skirt. Photography by JJ Grant (wonderlens)
