On Friday 22 March 2019, one of the most important and most talked-about contemporary artists, Yayoi Kusama, will turn 90 years old. To celebrate this fact, Museum Voorlinden will be showing some iconic works from their own collection in the garden room, including the reflective Infinity Room to her world-famous dotted pumpkin and monumental Infinity Nets. The presentation is supplemented with some loans from private collections and museums.
The work of Yayoi Kusama is based in conceptual art and shows some attributes of feminism, minimalism, surrealism, Art Brut, pop art, and abstract expressionism, and is infused with autobiographical, psychological, and sexual content. She has been acknowledged as one of the most important living artists to come out of Japan. From a young age, she already knew that she wanted to become an artist. The Japanese artist is also called the princess or polka dots. All her paintings, sculptures, installations and performances have one thing in common: dots. Since her youth, she has been dealing with psychoses. To overcome her fears, she filled the room with dots.
Voorlinden is a private museum for modern and contemporary art at a magnificent estate in the dunes at Wassenaar, a stone’s throw from The Hague. Businessman and art collector Joop van Caldenborgh realised his dream here in 2016: a museum of international allure that houses his renowned collection. The attractive white building offers a space for Van Caldenborgh’s rich and surprising collection, permanent works of art made especially for the museum and temporary exhibitions.
