Product Review: Meiji – Kinoko no Yama, Takenoko no Sato, Apollo Strawberry & Banana Choco

Photographs by MuchMunchies

Recently I purchased four popular Meiji chocolate snacks, but these are not the only ones nor the only versions of these candies. The four chocolate snacks I bought are: Kinoko no Yama, Takenoko no Sato, Apollo Strawberry and Banana Choco.

Meiji – Kinoko no Yama
Price: ± €2,-

If you’ve read some of my other product reviews these might seem familiar to you, since I reviewed the candy kit that goes with this product. You can find this review here. The packaging is pretty cute and I thought it was a nice detail to see the little mushrooms on the package within the cardboard box.

The cookies reminded me of Liga Milkbreak cookies, they were a light snack with tasty milk chocolate. It’s too bad some of the cookies crumbled a bit in the packaging and the crumbs stuck to the chocolate, which made them less pretty. A few of the cookies were broken, but not very many.

Meiji – Takenoko no Sato
Price: ± €2,-

The packaging of this one is similar to that of the Kinoko no Yama cookies, the package within the cardboard box had tiny bamboo shoots on them as well. Personally I thought these were supposed to be mountains, until I found out they were supposed to be bamboo shoots, but that’s probably because I’d never even heard of bamboo shoots.

These cookies are a little crunchier than the Kinoko no Yama ones, there’s also more cookie to them and more of a chocolate layer covering them rather than a lot of chocolate with a bit of cookie. The cookies had an almond flavour to them, since almond and chestnut were listed as ingredients that’s no surprise. None of these cookies broke in the packaging, but they were also, unfortunately, covered in crumbs.

Meiji – Apollo Strawberry
Price: ± €2,-

Another one that might seem familiar if you’ve read my other product reviews. You’ll find one here of the candy kit associated with these candies. The packaging has a very cute strawberry pattern on it.

These tasted like strawberry white chocolate with milk chocolate, but the milk chocolate had a fainter taste than milk chocolate usually does. You can bite these in a way that the chocolate separates, but I preferred both kinds of chocolate together. The milk chocolate probably has a fainter flavour so the strawberry flavour stands out more when you eat them. None of these chocolates broke in the packaging.

Meiji – Choco Banana
Price: ± €2,-

The packaging is pretty cute, the monkey on it is a nice touch, as is PomPomPurin.

The outer layer had an artificial banana flavour to it and the inside had a milk chocolate flavour. It reminds me of M&Ms, but with banana flavour. Some of them broke in the packaging, but not a lot of them.

All of these snacks were fun to try and had their own unique flavours. I’ll definitely be ordering some of these again in the future. If you are looking for cute tasty snacks that you could use to decorate (cup)cakes or other sweets, these would definitely do.

A cropped version of a photo of Shuya Onuki as KAMIKAMIKAMI, but edited in a way that it shows an eerie and mysterious moment. The photo consists of a bright light source, most probably the sun, and the musician who seemed to have taken the photo in a window. The editing is done by Floor Toppets @/fl00r99 on Instagram, and shows blurring and filters, making it an abstract photo.
