For the sixth time now, the multidisciplinary BOZAR Electronic Arts Festival (BEAF) will occupy every corner of the Centre for Fine Arts. Over several days, starting from September 14, this festival presents the broadest possible view of the electronic arts, at the cutting edge of art and technology.
On of the names that will be performing is Phew. Hiromi Moritani (Phew) is a legendary Japanese singer and composer. She has recently been awarded critical respect for the work she has been doing over the last 40 years. Collaborations with Can’s Jaki Liebezeit and Holger Czukay, legendary krautrock producer Conny Plank, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jah Wobble, Bill Laswell, Jim O’Rourke and The Boredoms, the creation of various punk bands – Phew’s career began in the 70s when she fronted Osaka punk group Aunt Sally (who released one album on Vanity Records in 1979) – and a body of work that spans different generations have placed Phew as the queen of avant-garde. After a 20 year recording hiatus, she returns with a brand new album: Light Sleep. Live, her voice is at the commands while abstract electronics are treated directly, creating tracks that are both highly emotional and sonically challenging. Her performance will take place on September 30 from 20.30. Next to a performance at this festival, Phew will perform a few times in Switzerland.
Next to Phew, the festival has a minimalist Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner as its musical headliner, in the shape of Jóhann Jóhannsson, composer of soundtracks for, among other films, Arrival and the new Blade Runner. Other names are Ben Frost, William Basinski, Pantha du Prince and SpaceTime Helix. But also the world debut of the Black rain 4 pieces live group with founder Stuart Argabright (Ike Yard), Zanias, Soren Roi and Otto Lindholm (Gizeh Records). The festival will start on September 14 with an openings night, after that the festival will take place on September 16, 26, 28, 29 and 30. The price of a weekend pass for September 29 and 30 is € 45,00, a festival pass for all days is € 70,00. The openings night is free of entrance. One of the exhibitions that can be visited is the “I’m Humanity” by Etsuko Yakushimaru that won a Grand Prize for Artistic Exploration.
