Editor’s Letter: (Day)dreaming

Editor’s Letter: 2015; wat ging je toch snel voorbij!

It’s weird that a year can go by so fast. Exactly a year ago around this time, I was several hours up in the sky on my way to Tokyo: my dream finally became reality!

My mother especially came to The Hague a few days prior to help me pack (in a smart way) and to drive me to Schiphol. I actually planned to take the first train to Schiphol in the morning, but my mother didn’t want that. It probably was special for her to put her daughter on a plane to Japan and not see her for a month. For me, everything was special and new, especially the flying.

Dreams are usually unusual and sometimes totally illogical.

I first flew to Vienna to transfer to a different plane there. The idea that I could finally sit in the plane and travel to the country to see everything I want to see with my own eyes was something I could only dream of. Speaking of that, beforehand I had quite some dreams that had to do with aeroplanes and the flying to Japan. Dreams are usually unusual and sometimes totally illogical, but from forgetting certain luggage, problems with customs to seeing a plane crash, are caused by certain worries which I had before I went on vacation. I don’t let it get to me, because I know where they are coming from.

My vacation in Japan lasted one month, and in my opinion, this was way too short. It felt to me like it was going by way too fast as well! During this time I had many adventures, met a lot of people and especially did a lot of purchases. I can look back on it happily even now. A certain CD is avoided for now because it reminds me too much of my time in Japan if I listen to it. Even though it was a nice time, it reminds me that I really want to go back to Japan. And thanks to the “On This Day” function on Facebook I’ll be seeing what I did a year ago in Japan for the next few weeks, which will make me swallow a few times for sure. Time to gather enough money soon and go to the Land of the Rising Sun again!

Until then I will keep on daydreaming with a smile about all of my adventures during my first stay in Japan. In the meantime, I will make notes of the adventures I want to take on when I get back there. I can’t wait until I will have the option to step onto the plan towards Japan, because sjeez… Japan, I miss you!

A cropped version of a photo of Shuya Onuki as KAMIKAMIKAMI, but edited in a way that it shows an eerie and mysterious moment. The photo consists of a bright light source, most probably the sun, and the musician who seemed to have taken the photo in a window. The editing is done by Floor Toppets @/fl00r99 on Instagram, and shows blurring and filters, making it an abstract photo.
