As promised in the review for Kirby Fighters Deluxe, today, it is the turn of the other Deluxe little brother: Dedede’s Drum Dash Deluxe, a game full of coins, percussion instruments, rhythm and above all fun! Is this game around our favorite Blue Penguin worth the effort or would it maybe be better to lay this on the side? Well, AVO will assists you with making the decision!
Cute with extra peper
In Drum Dash Deluxe Kirby’s archrival (and scattered cuddling friend) King Dedede calls upon all players with any feeling for rhythm for a trip through lively levels full of drums, tambourines, enemies and more. Just like with the Fighter Deluxe version, Dedede’s Drum Dash received in this Deluxe version some nice adjustments and extra’s. For example, there is a possibility to achieve trophy’s and King Dedede appears after achieving your first trophy on the intro screen waving the trophy proudly around (and clumsily letting it fall back) Also color screens and the design have changed a bit and give the level screens in the game a lighter and edgier and more adult look compared to the original, without losing some of the playfulness.
More than double the fun
Also new in Dedede’s Drum Dash Deluxe is that an extra pack of levels have been added to the game. As the original game had 3 start levels and 1 extra level, the Deluxe version gives you access to at least 6 different stages which already can be unlocked at the start by completing the previous level from the game. Each successive level is slightly harder (or more) than that and includes a race course made up of timpani and drums that King Dedede as trampolines used to collect coins and avoid enemies. The background of the levels gives the ‘ Kingdom ‘ of our favorite Penguin during a certain time of the day. This means that there are actually very few variation in the background, with the exception of the color scheme that keeps changing. Level 1, for example, has a very clear ‘ early morning ‘ atmosphere while the night is clear in level 6, but otherwise the background elements are just the same. Marks the end of the day, however, the end of the game? No! Dedede’s Drum Dash Deluxe rewards you perseverance with a whole new and more exciting level to the coronation of the King to celebrate and if this is your hunger for cash collection yet rhythmically saturates, Dedede’s DDD after the credits also opens the doors to 7 ‘ secret ‘ – that is, extra hard-versions of the original 7 internships!
Gameplay
Drum Dash Deluxe keeps the controls and rules for the game simple so as good as anyone easily can jump. As a player you get in charge of King Dedede’s sense of rhythm and direction by using your D-pad horizontally across the different percussion instruments. Jumping from drum to drum is done automatically, but the strength of your jump and so how high you go-you control. When you come down, you may press just that little bit on A higher jump than normal to coins, where you just can’t, to be able to grab them. Are the coins still too high? Then you can go from your mediocre leap to a super jump going the same way! Keep an eye on your health bar during the jumps. Various obstacles and enemies that you encounter on your path, bring your energy and balance down when you accidentally touch them, which can mean that you landed wrong on your drum, fall off or worse – being killed off and a game over. If you maintain your rhythm and dodge all dangers, then our Kings Penguin ends up safe on the Kirby platform and the level will officially have been cleared.
After each level your score will be calculated for you. This consist of an amount of collected coins, your distance without losing your rhythm, the time you still had left and a four time bonus, namely a time bonus, no damage bonus, all coins bonus and a bonus for the perfect backbeat. The backbeat translates in the game as clapping, by pressing the A button, by King Dedede at the highest point of each jump. When the Backbeat is running correctly, save Dedede on a tambourine, but when you can execute a Backbeat on a gong in the level, save the King on the instrument allowing more coins to appear.
After each level when you get to see your recent achieved trophy you get the choice to do redo the level and try to improve the score or immediately proceed to the next level. A third option is the all-new ‘Replay Jam’ that gives you the chance to review your run trail while in the meantime you can jam by amusing yourself with the different buttons with sounds of cymbals, drums and clapping.
Masks and Kirby: Triple Deluxe Extra’s
While you’re in Kirby Fighters Deluxe various hats be unlocked, Drum Dash Deluxe works with masks. So everyone that owns the game and finished playing the C-R-O-W-N-E-D level (stage 6) can receive the Masked Dedede mask. Drum Dash Deluxe has a lot of other wearable masks in store like, one from Kirby, Meta Knight, Waddle Dee and Taranza. However, only the latter are unlockable by owning Kirby: Triple Deluxe dates. When Kind Dedede wears a mask, sounds effects are added your run that come with the mask.
Fun for the persevering
Dedede’s Drum Dash Deluxe is a game with a low threshold, but will only be really fun for those who have stayed in the genre. Around level 5 the levels start to have a certain difficulty with it to ensure that only a few gets higher as you also go through the extra levels. We think that Dedede’s Drum Dash Deluxe will have a longer lifetime for people who want to go for the perfection and most casual players will keep it at the first levels. The fact that there are is no form of online comparison with friends in the game ingrained and that you only have 1 mask that can be unlocked if you don’t have the Triple Deluxe in your possession, gives little reason to go through all 14 levels by pushing if you can’t hold on.
