This past weekend, it was revealed who will represent Japan in the international final of Emergenza 2025, a showcase and competition for emerging talent from around the world. The choice fell on the four-piece instrumental rock band LiberaMe, led by violinist Eisuke Takashima. In August, the Japanese band will compete against seven other musical acts as they perform at Germany’s Taubertal Festival in front of a large audience. This year, the Taubertal Festival will take place from 7 to 10 August in the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
Since 2022, the Tokyo-based band has been operating as Eisuke Takashima Band, but since autumn 2023, the four musicians have been active under the name LiberaMe, a Latin phrase often used in religious and spiritual contexts. The music they produce consists of traditional Japanese melodies interwoven with solid rock and metal influences. They regularly work with guest musicians who play traditional Japanese instruments (such as the shakuhachi and shamisen). After releasing several singles, LiberaMe’s first album, 鳴神 (Narukami), a reference to a deity in the Shinto religion associated with thunder as well as water and fire, was released in March this year.
The other acts that will perform at the Emergenza 2025 world final are French space-funk band BLONK, Norwegian rock/metal band Brostein, Danish metal band Mesarite, Swedish mix-rock band UPPRORET, Italian alt-rock band The Lungs, Finnish art-rock band Spotless Souls, and German indie rock band Crimson Bloom. LiberaMe’s performance at the festival is scheduled for Saturday 9 August at 5.30 pm on the Sounds For Nature Stage. The winner will be announced on Sunday.
Last year, four-piece rock band THE STEREOGANG participated in the Emergenza competition, but narrowly missed out on winning, finishing in third place. A year earlier, Japanese instrumental music project TRAinnovation did manage to take the title, with their mix of traditional sounds and electronic elements. Will LiberaMe manage to bring victory to Japan this year?
