The organisation behind the Dutch convention AnimeCon, J-POP Foundation, shared news about their plans for the convention. For this year, there are two events planned, the regular edition of AnimeCon in the summer, planned at De Broodfabriek in Rijswijk and AnimeCon Classic at Theaterhotel Almelo. It has been silent around AnimeCon for a while, but now it has been revealed what the plans are for 2021.
While the Classis edition was first announced in 2020, this was eventually postponed (to September 2021), just like the regular edition, due to the pandemic. It is now confirmed that the regular edition of AnimeCon will be postponed to next year. The exact date is not entirely finalised, but the organisation did note that it will take place sometime in early June. The organisation stated the following in their message: “Of course, we are all still in the middle of a pandemic. It is no secret that this influences the conventions heavily. Many events, including ours, were postponed or cancelled. Since the situation will not have improved enough by June to hold an event like AnimeCon safely, we will, unfortunately, have to postpone this year’s AnimeCon once again to next year.”
The new event, AnimeCon Classic, will still be prepared as usual. Although the organisation said that they keep in mind that it might have to be postponed again: “We are discussing all the available options with the venue and our partners. We all want to make the best and the most out of it, but as usual, safety first. We will keep you updated as we know more.”
At the end of their message, the organisation presented a surprise of a new event, a Christmas edition of AnimeCon. They asked to keep the dates of 11 and 12 December open for a one-time Christmas special, this will take place at the Broodfabriek in Rijswijk. More details will be announced at a later date.
As a replacement for the summer edition of AnimeCon in 2020, an online event was organised with the name AnimeCon @ Home. There was a mention of another online edition, but when that is planned or if it is still in the works is unknown. But as can be read above, the organisation is already very busy with planning two new events for this year, although one will be a one-time-only event.
All changes of Japan-related events and events where Japanese musicians are planned to perform are compiled in a list that you can find here. This list will be regularly updated.
