Following the Japan Festival, on 4 November in Amstelveen, Platform organizes C | Kunstuitleen Amstelveen the exhibition with Tsukiji as the subject. During the exhibition, you can view work by photographer Paul van Riel.
During his many report trips to Japan, he visited the biggest fish market in the world Tsukiji in Tokyo, often in the agenda of Paul van Riel. Tsukiji, a well-known old district in the centre of the metropolis Tokyo, lends its name to the largest fish market in the world, which has been considered a must-see for years. This has come to an end, after 83 years, at the beginning of October. The market closed largely and had to move to a new home in Toyosu in the bay of Tokyo a few kilometres away from Tsukiji.
Paul van Riel shows at this exhibition a selection of the images that he recently made on and around the market – not only of fish, but also, and above all, of people, the decrepit housing of the market and the old-fashioned direct environment. One of the last undeveloped parts of the city centre with an ‘old world’ appearance will disappear. With a finely developed sense of detail, Paul van Riel translates his impressions of and love for this unique habitat into an impressive image story.
The exhibition can be visited from October 18 to November 10 at Kunstuitleen Amstelveen. On Thursday 18 October at 16.30 the exhibition will be opened by Bas Eenhoorn, acting mayor of the municipality of Amstelveen.
