The anime Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu LOVE! (shortened to Boueibu) is an anime that falls under the “magical girls” genre, but instead of girls it’s about a group of boys!
Refreshing, you’d think, but they don’t take it as seriously as you’d expect. Boueibu is a fun, short comedy anime, of about three-hundred minutes long (twelve episodes of around twenty-five minutes each). The first episode of Boueibu was aired on the 6th of January in 2015 and the last episode on the 24th of March in the same year. It was written by: Michiko Yokote, directed by: Shinji Takamatsu and aired on TV Tokyo.
A fun anime with a nice opening song that’s very catchy. The story revolves around five boys who get magical powers from a strange alien creature and with this are named the airs to the throne of love. These powers consist of different elements and, when all of them are combined, are very strong. With these powers they have to defeat monsters. These monsters are sent by the antagonists, who are known as the Earth Conquest club. Not to anyone’s surprise the five hero’s call themselves the Earth Defense club.
Unfortunately it isn’t a very serious anime. There’s a lot of joking around and a lot of weird things happen, but there’s no space for anything heartbreaking. And maybe that’s for the best!
Despite all the joking around, there is a good buildup of tension in the episodes, but this becomes less after the sixth episode, just to make a surprising comeback during the eleventh episode.
At first glance the series doesn’t seem to have a storyline at all. Just a couple of boys who prance around in cheerful outfits to be able to defeat weird monsters. But it does have a pretty good storyline, that does manage to keep the anime thrilling from start to finish. Full of mystery and a lot of humor.
Personally I would definitely recommend this anime, but fair warning, there are a few shonen ai elements to this anime! But that was to be expected with a world where there are no girls to be found!
Still want to see more of these magical boys after watching the anime? Don’t worry! There’s also a spin-off manga of the series, where you get to know the boys of the Conquest club a little more and then there’s also a novel and a game! Enough to keep yourself busy!
