Qujaku keert terug met gloednieuwe single en tour door Verenigd Koninkrijk

Voor het eerst in vijf jaar komt de experimentele psychedelische rockband Qujaku met een nieuwe single, getiteld Ruiteggaakupanshi, en met deze nieuwe release zal de band in het Verenigd Koninkrijk touren. De tour gaat van start op Fat Out Fest in Manchester en eindigen in Preston, tussendoor zal de band als supportact optreden voor de MELT-BANANA show in Londen en ook te zien zijn op Glastonbury Psychfest.

De nieuwe single komt uit op een 12 inch single, bevat drie tracks en volgt hiermee hun in 2019 uitgebrachte EP In Neutral op. Qujaku’s muziek wordt omschreven als agressief maar met een delicate melodie, maar ook zwaar met een stabiel ritme dat doet denken aan Japanse undergroundlegendes als Keiji Haino en Les Rallizes Denudes.

De band werd gevormd in 2013, toen nog onder de naam The Piqnic. Na het uitbrengen van hun debuutalbum in 2015 en een Europese tour, brachten ze een jaar later een single uit als Qujaku. Sindsdien zijn ze diverse keren in Europa geweest, in 2017, 2018 en 2019, daarnaast brachten ze een EP en hun eerste zelfgetitelde album uit. In de jaren die daarop volgten trad Qujaku sporadisch op in Japan.

Vocalist Shuya Onuki is in Berlijn terecht gekomen en heeft onder de naam s/h/u/y/a een noise-industrial soloproject, maar is ook actief als producer. Interessant om te weten is dat hij naast zijn optreden als onderdeel van Qujaku ook solo zal optreden op Fat Out Fest. Gitarist Soushi Mizuno is onder andere druk bezig geweest in een studio als mastering engineer en heeft een interessant lijstje van werk waar hij aan heeft gewerkt. Bassiste Hiromi Oishi bracht in 2020 haar solo EP uit waarin ze de piano bespeeld, ze zal zelf ook op Fat Out Fest optreden, het is dan voor het eerst dat ze in Europa optreedt met haar soloproject. Drummer Ryo Habuto is in de afgelopen jaren behoorlijk actief geweest, waaronder in de improvisatieband Mizumi, die eind 2023 een album uitbracht.
