In short: May is an exciting month when it comes to Japanese music in Europe.

If you have a broad interest in music genres, like me, then you’ve got a problem, unless you can clone yourself, because you have to choose exactly where you want to go and you can only spend your money once. But this is actually something that will still apply in the coming months, because the festival season is about to kick off.

On tour this month/in Europe: HYPER GAL, Guitar Wolf, luvis, Necry Talkie, TAMIW, the cabs., Banshimoku, bed, EMNW, Showmore, Momoko Iwasaki, appi, Minami Deutsch, Maki Oyama, Risky Melody, Paledusk, KNOSIS, THE DEVIL INSIDE, tzkwym, HYDE, Village in Maier, PPPR!!, MION, Yuri Hirano, BABYBEARD, Ichika Nito, SOSOSO

HYPER GAL have just wrapped up their European tour, but I still wanted to include them on the list. Last Wednesday, I attended their gig at Musicon in The Hague and was able to add their latest album Our Hyper to my physical CD collection. It was a special evening, with GirlPower Radio interviewing the musical acts and then turning the cameras on the stage. During an interview with vocalist Koharu Ishida, I learned that the duo were travelling through Europe by train to reach their gig destinations. The entire evening was broadcast live and will soon be available to watch on the YouTube channel of GirlPower Radio.

Speaking of a new album, the legendary band Guitar Wolf are set to release a new album soon and will kick off their extensive European tour on 14 May. The Netherlands certainly won’t be left out, with two shows in Hoogeveen and Utrecht. As far as I know, this three-piece rock ’n’ roll band always plays in the Netherlands, but interestingly, there are no shows scheduled in the United Kingdom.

But plenty is going on in the UK when it comes to Japanese music events. Firstly, the organisers of The Great Escape in Brighton have gone to great lengths to invite various Japanese bands to their festival. In addition, Japanese music companies such as Columbia Marketing, FRIENDSHIP., Spincoaster, TuneCore Japan, and The Orchard Japan have organised an evening on 14 May featuring four bands: luvis, Necry Talkie, TAMIW, and the cabs. The latter two bands also have a short tour planned. Furthermore, the bands Banshimoku, bed, EMNW, the jazz/soul duo Showmore and singer-songwriter Momoko Iwasaki will be performing at this festival. In addition, singer-songwriter appi is touring the UK for the first time, with a brand-new album under her belt, Red Comb.

The krautrock band Minami Deutsch kicked off a short European tour on 1 May at the Fuzz Club Festival in Eindhoven and will wrap it up tonight in The Hague. In addition, rock musician Maki Oyama kicked off her first European tour in Germany last weekend and will soon be performing with Risky Melody on 13 and 14 May at Musicon in The Hague and P60 in Amstelveen. These shows are supported by AVO Magazine.

It is clear that Musicon has recently become a popular venue for Japanese artists, given that Ryosuke Kiyasu, TsuShiMaMire and Kukangendai have all performed on the Hague stage over the past year. Next month, Melt-Banana will also be performing there.

Last week, Paledusk kicked off their first headlining European tour, entitled What is Paledusk?? , featuring seventeen shows across ten countries, with Knosis, the music project of Ryo Kinoshita (ex-Crystal Lake), as one of the support acts. If you haven’t bought a ticket yet, you’ll need to be quick, as tickets are selling fast and a number of shows are already sold out.

In terms of visual kei, it’s also worth noting that two solo projects; Aryu’s THE DEVIL INSIDE and Tsuzuku’s tzkwym, have kicked off their joint European tour with seven shows. If the initial reactions on social media are anything to go by, you can expect a highly energetic performance where the audience certainly won’t be standing still. In addition, vocalist HYDE will be travelling to Austria for a special performance in Vienna with the Kulturverein Orchester Wien. A unique performance, given that this is the first time a Japanese rock musician will be performing with a Viennese orchestra.

In the idol scene, two shows are scheduled in Germany for the groups Village in Maier (who have previously performed in the Netherlands) and PPPR!!, with a proper mini idol cruise even on the cards (which is completely sold out). Singer-songwriter MION is still busy performing across Europe, and appeared at YumeKai in Germany last weekend, just like idol Yuri Hirano, but MION will also be heading to France for performances at Metztorii. BABYBEARD will be heading to Poland in a few days for a performance on the Saturday of Magnificon.

And let’s not forget that Ichika Nito will kick off his short European tour at the Bridge Guitar Festival in Eindhoven at the end of May. The duo SOSOSO will soon be travelling to Spain for a number of performances at IberAnime on 16 May.

Alongside this month’s busy schedule of Japanese music events, we are also quietly celebrating the anniversary of AVO Magazine, or rather, its predecessor, AVO Forum. This began on 16 May 2003 as a cosy forum. A webzine was a logical next step and actually went hand in hand with the start of organising concerts and festivals. It is therefore an honour that the two Dutch shows by Risky Melody and Maki Oyama are being supported by AVO Magazine and that we were recently able to give away concert tickets for these shows.

As mentioned earlier, the coming months will still be interesting in terms of upcoming music events, but it is a huge challenge to write about all the upcoming tours. We could certainly do with some help! If you’re interested in highlighting upcoming events and tours, writing about music releases and more, please know that we’re always on the lookout for new writers (and photographers) to join our team!
