WACK in the UK has quickly become a highlight on the calendar of any self-respecting fan of the Japanese idol scene. In fact, it has grown beyond the show itself; even the queue outside the venue has become an event as those with VIP tickets arrive early for their meet-and-greet, whilst old friends catch up and new connections are forged. An excited chatter fills the air and the sense of anticipation is palpable as those with regular tickets arrive early in the hopes of securing a coveted place in front of the stage.<\/p>\n
As we descended the steps and enter the cave-like venue that is the Underworld the excitement follows us and a diverse array of fans are in attendance, including a large contingent from overseas (many of who used my photographers’ stool). There\u2019s not long to wait for the opening act MAMESHiBA NO TAiGUN TONAi BOUSHO a.k.a. MONSTER IDOL, who make their first appearance at the event. They kick things off with their light-hearted and playful performance which was a treat for their core fanbase and made the perfect introduction for those who are new to the world of idol.<\/p>\n
Second to enter the arena were the idol group BiS. Now, this was a big deal as although they are in their third generation, this is WACK’s flagship group. Having the opportunity to see BiS live is like watching the birth of the WacK idol scene; it\u2019s the equivalent of the \u201cBig Bang\u201d that brought our universe into being. They have an alternative and unconventional style that is indicative of WACK’s attitude to the idol world. It was a treat to see them in action, especially their human pyramid. What made their performance all the more special was their announcement that they would be disbanding again.<\/p>\n
Headliners ASP are no strangers to WACK in the UK, having played at the previous two events, but are always mindful to give their fans something new and tonight they appear dressed all in black and with long flowing capes that make them look like they\u2019ve seven superheroes. Those unfamiliar with the idol scene might view it as something soft and fluffy, and that\u2019s where ASP step in to blow any preconceived ideas to smithereens.<\/p>\n
